Duties and Responsibilities

The Harvard Program in Therapeutic Science, HiTS, is a ‘One Harvard’ program supporting research and education university wide. With the broad mission comes a need for professional oversight and integration of the research support activities overseen by HiTS.

The Research Operations Manager is responsible for establishing standard operating procedures for all experimental methods in LSP including but not limited to safety protocols, cell culture standards, schedules and protocols for reagent validation, and development of a system for indexing reagents and cells. In addition, this role is advisory to the research programs established between HiTS and the affiliate institutions (to date DFCI, BWH, MGH and Tufts) and is responsible for ensuring that  the research conducted under those agreements is allowable, responsibly vetted, and not at odds with institutional goals.

The individual described is also responsible for overseeing purchase of  daily lab materials and reagents for the LSP, for Sorger lab in Systems Biology, and for other HiTS associated PIs at HMS and in partner institutions. This is a complex coordination across the lab and finance teams to ensure that charges are made to the correct award, are allowable, and are supported by the appropriate documentation. Inevitably mistakes are made and must be managed and rectified in a politically sensitive way to retain working relationships across HiTS, the department and affiliates. The grant portfolio is complex, comprised of over 10 awards with a spend rate of $3.2M annually for supplies alone.

The individual is also a named member of the research team for the LSP P50 center grant. Duties include responsible administration of the lab itself, serving as an ambassador to recruit new investigators, supporting current researchers in their career development by supporting the development and execution of training opportunities, and providing support to the Executive Director in all aspects requested, including fundraising, lab social activities, construction design, and advisement on lab development.

Research Operations Manager establishes and maintains relationships with other Research Operations Managers (ROMS) in the Longwood Medical Area (HMS, HSPH, HSDM) and actively participates in monthly advisory meetings, sustainability initiatives, and important safety practice development and implementation within laboratories in the HITS program.  The Research Operations Manager maintains and facilitates programmatic interactions with affiliated institutions and cores including BWH, DFCI and Children’s Hospital.  The incumbent also assists in collaborative research with Mass General Hospital by providing space and research supplies for visiting scientists from Dr. Albers Laboratory, an element that will grow in the coming year to include not just MGH but also other regional universities.
